Yellow Bellied Slider

The yellow bellied slider is a medium to large size freshwater aquatic turtle commonly found in central and eastern North Carolina.  They have a smooth flat carapace or upper shell, yellow colored plastron or lower shell, and a large yellow patch behind the eye.  These turtles are often found basking in the sun on fallen logs or tree stumps near ponds and lakes.

Male yellow bellied sliders tend to have really long fingernails compared to the females. During the breeding season, males will show off their long fingernails to females by twitching them in front of her face in an attempt to woo her.
