River Cooter

The River Cooter is a medium to large size aquatic turtle found in central and eastern North Carolina.  Cooters can be easily confused with the Yellow Bellied Slider as they both have a smooth flat carapace or upper shell and yellow colored plastron or lower shell.  Yellow Bellied Sliders, however, have a large distinctive yellow patch behind the eyes, whereas Cooters only have thin yellow stripes across the face.

Distinguishing male from female is also similar to the Yellow Bellied Slider.  Males have long fingernails and a longer tail compared to females.
